Cy and Ed are old. Really old. Ancient. And to top it off they have been holed up in a room for eons in a post-apocalyptic world where the only people they have are their doctor, their nurse, their wives and each other. At one point, these men – well, Gods – ruled over the Earth battling each other for power and control. But when we meet them in The Killing Room by Daniel Keene, they are shriveled up shells of the titans they once were, kept alive by constant IV blood transfusions and organ transplants, their only real pleasure derived from bickering with each other incessantly.

Inspired by the Ancient Story Of Thyestes, The Killing Room was commissioned by the One Year Lease Theater Company from Keene, who according to the press release is one of Australia’s most popular playwrights. The piece, billed as part ancient tragedy, part psychological thriller, and part absurd farce and woven together by Keene’s strong, steady hand, thrills with a wonderfully wicked subtlety lost on many modern playwrights.

It was also a joy to see the skill through which Christopher Baker and David Deblinger brought to life brothers Cy and Ed. The work of these master craftsmen along with the compelling performances by the rest of the ensemble not only served the play, but elevated the already exquisite text to another plane.

And, obviously, a great deal of the credit belongs to director Nick Flint, whose deft hand steered this provocative creation along powerfully using every tool at his disposal: a powerful script, a talented design team, and the performances on stage to bring to life a marvelous, entertaining and insightful piece of theater. It is this type of work in the downtown theaterscape that leaves audiences clamoring for more new, innovative work. Definitely don’t miss it.

The Killing Room runs Wednesdays to Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm through April 2 at TEATRO CIRCULO at 64 East 4th Street (between 2nd Ave and Bowery). Tickets are available online here.

About the Playwright
Clay McLeod Chapman is the creator of the acclaimed storytelling session the Pumpkin Pie Show, which has been performed around the country and around the world for the past ten years. He wrote the book for the recent hit musical Hostage Song with Obie-award winning Kyle Jarrow. He is currently writing the book for a new musical with Grammy-winner Bruce Hornsby, directed by Tony-winner Kathleen Marshal, titled SCKBSTD—as well as The Nitpicker, a new musical with rocker Mary McBride, directed by Scott Ellis. Chapman is also on the writing-team for THE RIDE, a multi-media musical tour through New York City, produced by Counts Media, Inc., and Blue Man Group. Chapman’s other plays include bar flies, lee’s miserables, No Exitway, duct-tape to family-time, drinking games, redbird, jewish mothers, junta high, nested doll, and volume of smoke.

About One Year Lease
Founded in 2000, One Year Lease (OYL) is an ensemble theater company made up of seven actors, four designers, two dramaturgs, and one artistic director who work together to produce high-quality, provocative theater. The ensemble, featuring American and international artists, performs in New York and abroad. We also host a summer apprenticeship program in northern Greece, where college students work, live, and study with OYL actors, designers, and directors. We are back from an amazing time in Papingo, Greece. We rehearsed Teaser Cow which will be opening in NYC Jan 15th 2010 at Teatro Circulo

One Year Lease and the Vassar students also produced a play (Gilgamesh) with the children from the village of Megalo Papingo, it was a performance to be remebered.

They were amazing.

An amazing experience. By the end of the show there was barely a dry eye in the audience.
I was lucky enough to perform an amazing Monologue writing by Craig Pospisil...Also happens to be my husbands collaborator the piece is called "In a word". The show consisted of many different pieces by different writers, performed my different artist and actors. From points of views of the men that serve, their mothers, brothers, their wives, their fathers. Then the general effects that the war has on gas prices etc and what's to come in the future.
The opening night was followed with a Q&A along with Vets from Vietnam and The Gulf War their was Sean Huze, a vet that came home last year from Iraq who was an actor before he left in LA. He has written his own show "Sand Strom" that had rave reviews in DC and LA.

Another actor Joseph Smallwood who performed originally with Sean in DC left for Baghdad a month later to do his part over there.

A play I have always wanted to perform in. Along with the lovely boys from "The Outhouse Theatre Company" the rest of the cast and with director Craig Baldwin. We achieved an incredibly moving, raw and uncomfortable play. A bloody amazing ride..

It really is amazing how one door closes and another opens, I was fortunate enough this year to experience some great theatre projects. That meant allot to those of us involved and to those that came to experience it.
I was able to be part of these projects as there were complications in getting back to New Zealand this year (fortunately we went back in November) initially I was devastated as I hadn't seen my family for along time, however. ...I was able to perform in Maine and just before we left for Maine in June I auditioned for "The Boys". It all works itself out eventually.
